Quality Improvement

Advanced Learning Coaching in Surrey

Surrey Lifelong Learning Partnership has been engaged to promote the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) Subject Learning Coach (SLC) Programme in Surrey. As a result, two people have joined the Professional Training Programme (part of the SLC Programme) to train as Advanced Learning Coaches (ALCs). They will each then go on to train up four tutors from their own organisations – Easy Surrey College and WEA - as Subject Learning Coaches.

The Professional Training Programme establishes a powerful peer coaching ethos at a variety of levels within the organisation which is directly linked to improvement in teaching and learning. This has real and valuable benefits for the learners who are at the heart of the process. The ALCs have an important role in this through developing innovative and exciting in-house delivery of the SLC programme within the organisation concerned. Through this, a whole organisation approach can be developed that leads to continual improvement of teaching and learning which can be sustained within the sector.

Recent inspections have indicated that the SLC model has made significant improvements to the learners and teaching staff concerned.

“The work of subject learning coaches, and the status that providers attach to this role, are crucial elements in promoting quality improvement. Most subject learning coaches, and those still being trained, speak with enthusiasm of how refreshed and empowered they feel as a result of their training, which improves teaching and learning and networking with colleagues.”

The entry criteria for those who can become ALCs have widened this year, and are no longer restricted to those already trained as SLCs. Entry criteria now include: advanced practioners; teacher educators; curriculum managers; staff development managers; heads of department or faculty; eCPD e-guides; eCPD professional development advisers; any other role where professional development of staff is significant.
