Guildford CLP has led an innovative youth consultation project, "Voicebox", for the Guildford Local Strategic Partnership. Voicebox used a mobile Big Brother style diary room at youth locations in Horsley and Bellfields. The project taught young people about interviewing and video-making skills and catured the views of youth on a variety of important local issues such as personal safety, leisure, health, finance and education. The resulting 20 minute Voicebox film was shown to Guildford Borough Council Community Scrutiny Committee who have agreed to act on the young people's comments in 2006. Acquiring a Taste for Music
During July 2004, Guildford Community Learning Partnership worked with the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford to offer a series of taster sessions in musical disciplines including guitar, vocals, DJing, sound recording and drumming, for people aged between 18-30 who had not previously been to University. These taster sessions were very successful and offered learners both a new skill and an experience of life and learning in a higher education institution. Read the full case study. Learning Shops and the Retail SectorThe Guildford CLP has been interested in engaging the retail sector in learning and training for some time..... and now the timing is right! A recent consultation, hosted by the Guildford Together consortium, discussed opportunities for incorporating a learning and training space within the redevelopment of the Friary Shopping Centre in Guildford. A project steering group has since been formed to propose the best use of space for the 900m2 community facility. The Community Learning Adviser sits on this steering group and is helping the Guildford Together consortium design their website, which will promote the new centre. Community Landscaping ProjectIn February, community volunteers worked together with volunteers from the University of Surrey (UniS)and school pupils from King's College to create new decorative beds on the large roundabout outside King's College in Park Barn. The project was funded by the Higher Education Active Communities Fund and aimed to increase community cohesion, improve the local environment and offer residents the chance to learn more about horticulture and planting. The project was organised by the University of Surrey Student's Union (USSU) and Guildford CLP. |
