History Teaches Families in Surrey

Ever wondered about your family roots? According to Surrey Libraries many people have. In response to the public's keen interest to learn more about their families and the past Community Learning Partnerships in Mole Valley, Surrey Heath, Waverley and Woking have partnered with Surrey Libraries to present eight workshops on family history and how to uncover the past.  More...

According to Sue Gent, Library Development Service Manager for Lifelong Learning and Services to Children & Young People, a few family history workshops were presented in 2004 with great success. Classes were oversubscribed and learners were eager to have additional opportunities to learn more about the subject.  Based on the initial response, eight pilot workshops have been developed for Camberley, Dorking, Godalming and Woking libraries. The events will involve participants learning how to access online resources and archival materials in order to discover their family history.

Workshops in Camberley and Dorking will be held in conjunction with Local History Month. Ask Us About Archives will take place in Camberley on May 14th at 10:00am and 11:30am, while Family History on the Internet will be held at 10:30am, May 14th. Dorking events are scheduled for May 21st for the same three time slots, Ask Us About Archives at 10:00am and 11:30am, and Family History on the Internet at 10:30am. Workshops in Godalming and Woking will take place in mid-October during Family Learning Week. Advance booking for all sessions is essential and can be completed by phone or a visit to your local library.

Rachel Fry, Community Learning Adviser for the Mole Valley Community Learning Partnership, noted that “Community Learning Partnerships aim, through collaboration with partners and providers, to meet the learning needs of the community. Teaching people how to access their family history has been identified by community members as an area of interest. As such, we are pleased to support these learners in their quest to broaden their knowledge and expand their skills base.”

Plans are underway to increase the number of family history workshops across the County to reach an even higher number of learners.
