Celebration of Culture - May 2010

Day of Culture Wows Crowds in Woking

Woking Town Centre was buzzing with vibrant live music and dance performances from around the world on Saturday 15 May 2010 at the ‘Celebration of Culture’ organised by Surrey Lifelong Learning Partnership to kick off Adult Learners’ Week.

Seven live acts including bollywood and bhangra dancers, Peruvian musicians, Drumheads drum circle, the Chinese Association of Woking, Nepalese dancers and African singers spent Saturday entertaining the crowds on Woking Town Square. The acrobatic dance moves of 4X4 Bhangra provided a thrilling spectacle and adults and children alike joined in the fun, trying out different international dances and singing along with UZambezi Arts’s rousing performance of ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’.

The event was organised to celebrate cultural diversity and to promote adult learning in the local area. Stallholders were on hand to advise about courses and classes and on the day many adults took part in Bollywood dance workshops and free art classes put on by the University for the Creative Arts. The Chinese Association of Woking also demonstrated Tai Chi and Kung Fu and encouraged the audience to think about signing up for classes.

Lucy Andrews from organizers Surrey Lifelong Learning Partnership said “It was brilliant to see so many people enjoying the live performances and finding out about local adult learning opportunities. We hope the event will encourage people to think about signing up to learn something new – maybe music, dance or a foreign language”

The event has been funded by NIACE (National Institute of Adult Continuing Education) and SEEDA (South East England Development Agency) to celebrate Cultural Diversity Weekend as part of the national Adult Learners’ Week Campaign 2010.
