SLLP Wins Transformation Fund Grant - September 2009

Government funding helps kickstart the Learning Revolution in Surrey

Surrey Lifelong Learning Partnership is celebrating securing £98,750 from the Government as part of a 'learning for pleasure' innovation spearheaded by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). 'Transform IT', one of over 213 winning bids, is a countywide project to innovate and develop new ways of using and learning about computers and the internet for learning in local communities.

A 'Champion for Transformation' will be employed to research and develop new ways of using technology to enthuse and inspire adult learners and the project will pilot new resources and informative workshops and classes with up to 200 adults across the county. The project is backed by partners from across the adult learning sector in Surrey and will deliver benefits for adult learning teachers and learners in the local community over the coming years.

Kevin Delf, Chief Executive of Surrey Lifelong Learning Partnership said “We are delighted that this exciting project is coming to Surrey. New technologies and broadcasting have huge potential for engaging people and providing them with a more stimulating and rewarding learning experience.”

Across the nation, a diverse array of informal adult learning projects will be getting underway, ranging from creative music master classes for people out of work or education, learning adventures for isolated older people and reading opportunities for the over 60s. This grant is from the £20 million Transformation Fund, launched by Government to offer funding for to innovative informal adult learning projects in England. This brings to life The Learning Revolution, a White Paper presented to Parliament in March 2009.

The projects, many spearheaded by partnerships between public, private and third sector organisations, will help improve mental health, physical well-being, active citizenship and community cohesion, as well as providing a stepping stone towards further learning, qualifications and employment for many people.
