TransformIT Comes To Park Barn & Westborough

An intensive three-month project has been funded to provide a ‘blitz’ of up-skilling opportunities in Westborough and Park Barn to attract people who do not currently engage in learning. The project aims to make a positive impact on over 16s who are not in training or employment, or work part-time and want to upskill. Not only do we want to start people on their journey, but we believe it is vital to provide progression opportunities that continue after the project is finished.

Word of mouth is often the most effective way to reach people, and we are working with intermediaries who can access people in their home, so that as many people have a chance to take part. We can also deliver one-to-one in the home using an internet enabled laptop, so that no one need miss out!

Anyone who knows of someone who might benefit, has any good opportunities for engagement, or has ideas about what else could be offered can contact Siân Sangarde-Brown or John Thurlow

MEND returns to Guildford!

Surrey Primary Care Trust and Guildford Borough Council will be offering two new MEND sessions this term to children who are overweight, or at risk of becoming so, and their families. It achieves this by educating both children and their families about food and introducing them to a range of activities to encourage them to participate in exercise more frequently.
MEND is not a ‘diet’- it helps children and their families become fitter, healthier and happier by offering free healthy living programmes in the local community. The scheme was established in 2004, and was developed off the back of 20 years of research by the world renowned Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and the University College London Institute of Child Health.
Since it began, over 400 MEND programmes have been delivered by partners across the world which have benefitted over 15,000 families. Sessions run twice a week for one school term and the programme is currently looking for children to join sessions in Guildford (starting after half term in February 2010) and Ash (starting after Easter holidays in April 2010).

If you would like to sign your child up, please contact Liz Toft, Specialist Dietician at Royal Surrey County Hospital, on 01483 464119 or email her on elizabeth.toft@royalsurrey.nhs.uk. More details about the scheme are available from www.mendprogramme.org

Story-telling and Puppet-making in Ash

Surrey born and bred children’s author Hilda Brazil came to Ash during October half term to read her book “Romany Johnny Joe”. The West Surrey Foundation Adult Learning Centre provided a comfortable and fun environment for 16 families to hear this charming story where the underdog wins against all the odds, and reinforces the message about not judging others. Everybody had the chance to colour in pictures copied from the book and make puppets based on its characters. The Black Rat and Johnny Joe were particular favourites.

storytelling workshop

Every family left with a free copy of the book and were looking forward to using the puppets to help bring the story to life. Other partners that made this event special were Surrey Traveller Community Relations Forum, Surrey County Council Family Learning and Guildford Local Safety Officers Lesley and Jo.

Next Meeting

Tuesday 8th February 2011 2-3.30 pm at North Guildford Children’s Centre in Bellfields
