Keep your children safe on the internet
Woking Informer 12 May 2011

Parents are being encouraged to keep an eye on what children are looking at online with a series of free sessions from the Surrey Lifelong Learning Partnership (SLLP) and Childnet International.
Sponsored by Woking Borough Council, more than 50 frontline workers across the borough have been trained and will pass on their knowledge.
Sian Sangarde-Brown, who is helping to organise the events, said: "We are aware that some young people and vulnerable adults are at risk of some online sites, particularly of extreme content websites, including about body weight."
"We also teach about cyber bullying, which is on the increase with the social networking young people do."
Those attending sessions also receive a free CD to help parents implement lessons.
Sian added: "One piece of advice is to have one e-mail address used by the whole family. Lots of parents do not realise that games consoles are also a link to social networking as well."

Keep IT Safe!
Last week, Surrey Lifelong Learning Partnership arranged for Childnet to deliver a presentation at Cornerhouse, on keeping children and young people safe on the internet. The presentation was made to members of Shifa, the Asian Women’s support service which runs from CornerHouse.

The internet is an extremely positive force and provides inspiring ways that children can discover, connect and create online. It is however important for families to be able to identify potential risks that are faced by the internet user. Childnet offer simple and thorough strategies that can be put in place in at home to model and reinforce internet safety.
At www.childnet.com you can connect online and explore internet safety for yourself through Childnet’s “Three Cs” risks and strategies, plus watch video clips and scenarios.

‘Online Basics’ at CornerHouse
Surrey Lifelong Learning Partnership will soon be working with the CornerHouse in Woking to deliver ‘Online Basics’ courses to its mental health service users and carers.
Online Basics is a simple free online course that has been developed for adults who have never used the internet before and is designed to support them to learn the basic skills they need to take their first steps with computers and online.
2008 data suggests that 29% or 13.9m adults in the UK or 11.6m in England still don’t use computers and the internet. Online Basics, and the subsequent pilot, is the government’s response to address this, and will include a core set of online learning modules which will support users to learn the basics skills including how to use a mouse and keyboard; email; online searches; and keeping safe online.
Online Basics includes the following five online learning modules:
1.Starting with a mouse
2.Starting with a keyboard
3.Using email
4.Using online searches
5.Using the internet safely
Surrey Lifelong Learning Partnership’s (SLLP) ‘Transform IT’ project (funded via the Learning Revolution’s Transformation Fund) has registered as a pilot scheme for Online Basics. The pilot runs from January through March 2010 but it is anticipated that partners delivering Online Basics, including CornerHouse, will continue to do so beyond this date.
Interested service users and carers, or professionals wishing to signpost clients to this new opportunity, should contact Paul Field at CornerHouse in the first instance on 01483 757461 or 07872 957800
