The Child Poverty Act 2010 requires local authorities and partner organisations to work together to tackle child poverty and its effects. Surrey’s needs assessment (undertaken in February 2011) analyses the distribution, drivers and impact of economic deprivation for children and young people in Surrey and includes a local profile for each Borough and District.
Although informed by the Child Poverty Act 2010, Surrey County Council proposed that Surrey’s strategic approach should be titled the Families in Poverty Strategy. They believe this more accurately reflects the need to work with families to address child poverty, and recognises that many partners have a role in promoting parents’ economic well being and improving children and young people’s life chances. Surrey’s strategic approach will be governed through the Surrey Alliance for Children and Young People, however it is anticipated that many needs and issues will be more appropriately addressed through local planning and implementation. Over the coming months it is proposed to work with partners to develop a strategic approach to tackling family poverty and mitigating its effects, using the findings from this needs assessment.
